How to Start Bible Journaling (Simple, Beautiful, and Not Overwhelming)

If you’ve ever wanted to start Bible journaling but felt intimidated… you are not alone.

You see the gorgeous pages on Pinterest. The perfectly highlighted scriptures. The aesthetic notebooks with soft colors and beautiful handwriting.

And suddenly you think…
“I don’t have time for that.”
“Mine won’t look like that.”
“I don’t even know where to start.”

Let me gently tell you something:

👉 Bible journaling is not about perfection. It’s about connection.

It’s about slowing down, sitting with God, and letting His Word come alive in your heart.

So let’s take the pressure off and start simple.

What Is Bible Journaling?

Bible journaling is simply interacting with Scripture in a personal and creative way.

That could look like:

Writing notes in your Bible margins
Highlighting meaningful verses
Adding prayers or reflections
Using stickers, tip-ins, or bookmarks
Or just sitting quietly and writing what God is speaking to you

There is no right way to do it.

Step 1: Choose Your Bible (Keep It Simple)

You do not need a fancy journaling Bible to start.

Use what you have.

If you want to upgrade later, look for:

Wide margins
Journaling space
A translation you understand (like NLT, NIV, or CSB)

👉 The goal is understanding God’s Word—not having the prettiest pages.

Step 2: Gather a Few Basic Supplies

You don’t need a craft store haul to begin.

Start with:

A pen you love
A highlighter
Sticky notes or tabs

That’s it.

If you want to add a little “boujee” later (because we love that 😉):

Mildliners or gel pens
Washi tape
Simple stickers
Tip-ins (little inserts you tape into your Bible)

But remember… less is more when you’re starting.

Step 3: Pick One Scripture (Don’t Overload Yourself)

This is where most people get overwhelmed.

They try to read entire chapters, multiple devotionals, and journal everything at once.

Instead:
👉 Choose one verse.

Read it slowly.
Read it again.
Then ask yourself:

What is God saying here?
What does this mean for my life today?
What do I need to change, trust, or release?

Write your thoughts right there on the page—or on a sticky note.

Step 4: Create a Simple System

Here’s an easy beginner method you can follow every time:

1. Read the verse
2. Highlight what stands out
3. Write a short note or prayer
4. Reflect for a minute

That’s it.

No pressure. No performance.

Just you and God.

Step 5: Make It Beautiful (But Keep It Real)

Now here’s where your personality comes in.

You can:

Add a soft color palette
Use different pens for emphasis
Decorate lightly with washi or stickers

But hear me on this:

👉 Your Bible does not have to be aesthetic to be anointed.

Some of the most powerful pages will be messy… tear-stained… raw… and real.

And those are the ones that will mean the most to you later.

Step 6: Be Consistent, Not Perfect

You don’t need to journal every day.

Start with:

2–3 times a week
Even just 10 minutes

Consistency builds connection.

And over time, you’ll look back and realize…

👉 You didn’t just decorate your Bible
👉 You built a relationship with God

Final Encouragement

If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect time” to start Bible journaling…

This is it.

Not when you have better supplies
Not when life slows down
Not when you feel more “ready”

Start today.

Open your Bible.
Pick one verse.
Write one thought.

That small step?

✨ That’s where everything begins.
